Landed at Frankfurt 3:30 p.m. local time. No problem getting through
customs. Walked about a mile to get to the Sixth-Budget office, it was very
busy. They didn’t have the car we reserved, so ended up with a Ford
Escort station wagon. Thank God, we had so much luggage we could hardly fit
in the station wagon, never mind a sedan. It was dark metallic blue with air
conditioning, and only 6000 kilometers on it. Felt at home, everybody was
smoking in the airport. Rachel noticed that the cubicles in the ladies
washroom had ashtrays. Very civilized!

Didn’t have much trouble finding the hotel. Arrived at Novotel
Frankfurt City West at 6:00 p.m.. We had a view of the rapid transit,
recycling bins and garbage cans outside of our window. Definitely would
recommend this room to somebody attending a garbage convention in Frankfurt.
Interesting windows. European wood sash windows, about 4x4 ft. and opened
from top and side. We saw these types of windows all over Europe. Rachel
fell asleep and slept until 5:00 a.m. next morning. We went out for
a walk and found a restaurant next to the University, and had a German beer.
Drinking age is 18 in Germany, so Rachel didn't miss much. Weather was drizzly at 21 degrees. Noticed
that the grass was not tended to, but there were a lot of nice flowers.
Hotel had sauna and an interesting automatic shoe polisher which also
dispensed shoe polish. I tried it with my sandals and discovered that the
machine also did toenails. I couldn’t sleep until 2:00 a.m.

Woke up about 6:00 a.m., had breakfast at 8:00. Rita was very impressed
by the buffet breakfast, which was included in the price of the hotel room.
All kinds of cheeses, curd, fresh orange juice, which you made yourself with
a motorized juicer, cold cuts, fresh fruit, muesli and a variety of
wonderful breads. Checked out of hotel, 232 DM, ($189 CAN). We were on our
way to Luxembourg at 10:00 a.m.. Filled up with gas at 1.579 DM.
Drove around in Trier, on the German side of the border. Arrived in
Luxembourg 1:35 p.m.. Not a border guard in sight; everybody drove straight
through.
